Popular Almond Milk Co. Sued for Containing Almost no Almonds Whatsoever

popular almond milk

Almond milk is undoubtedly one of the most popular plant milks in the U.S.  It is packed with healthy nutrients, and known for diverse health benefits.

Almond milk is made by blending the almonds with water and straining the mixture to remove the solids.  It has a pleasant flavor and creamy texture, which makes it ideal for those allergic to dairy.

The concentration of nutrients in almond milk depends on the quantity of almonds used to make it,  the quantity of water, and whether it contains added vitamins and minerals.

For example, about 72 almonds (86 grams) may be used to make one cup (262 grams) of homemade almond milk.   On the other hand, commercial almond milk is more diluted.

7 Benefits of Almond Milk

1. It is nutritious

Almond milk typically contains added vitamin D, protein, and calcium, which makes it similar to regular milk in nutritional content.

2. It is low in calories

Almond milk is relatively low in calories, which means that you can drink a lot of it without worrying about weight gain.

3. It doesn’t raise blood sugar

Thanks to its high protein and fat content, almond milk doesn’t cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

4. It is dairy-free

It doesn’t contain any cow`s milk, which makes it a great option for vegans or those intolerant to milk.

5. Enriched almond milk may strengthen your bones

Enriched almond milk is a great calcium source for people who don’t consume dairy products.

6. It may reduce the risk of heart disease

Observational studies show that regular consumption of nuts is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.

7. Enriched almond milk is high in vitamin D

Like regular milk, almond milk often contains added vitamin D.

But, it is worth mentioning that the benefits outlined above apply for homemade almond milk only. Namely, turns out that the commercial almond milk contains almost no almonds, so it is no wonder that this stuff tastes like dirty water.”

Turns out you were close to being correct about the dirty water because, Almond Breeze’s UK website announced that each carton of their almond milk only contains 2% of actual almonds costing consumers $3-$5 for 32 fluid ounces.

But, if you have ever made it at home using 100 % almonds—you know that it takes way more than just that 2 % amount of almonds to produce even a cup of almond milk.

You may have your revenge for having to drink this as Almond Breeze is being sued for false advertising. More specifically for “[deceiving] customers into thinking that they’re buying a product made from almonds,” according to a report on the lawsuit by Time.

Almond Breeze responded in part by saying: “The primary ingredient in nearly all popular beverages including coffee, tea, soda, juice and sports drinks is water. Cow’s milk is 85% to 95% water and the same can be said for most soy and almond milks which is why our brand is not alone in responding to recent claims.”
