9 Signs You’re Overstressed (And Don’t Know It)

Did you know that stress can be the root cause of many ailments? It lowers immunity, causing us to feel pain and get sick often. Stress is a normal response which allows us to function properly, but longer periods of stress cause symptoms which are often difficult to spot. As explained by WebMD, “…any change in the environment that requires your body to react and adjust in response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you — and many things that you do yourself — put stress on your body. You can experience good or bad forms of stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts.”

  • Your body is in pain

It is no wonder that the body starts to break down under high stress levels! You can experience tense muscles, palpitations, chest pain, ulcers, diarrhea, and stomach issues.  Headaches are very common as well as aches all over the body and arthritis.  Each time you experience pain, become aware of it! Don’t take the symptoms for granted and address them as soon as possible.

  • You are not sleeping well

Sleep is one of the first things that get affected by high stress levels.  Any change in sleep patterns, whether insomnia or sleeping too much, has to be addressed.  Eating healthy, exercising, and meditation can all help with sleep issues. But, finding the root to the problem is the key! Are you having nightmares? Are you worrying too much?

  • You have weight fluctuations

Are forgetting to eat or overeating? Stress slows down the metabolism which eventually leads to weight gain. Change in appetite is a definite sight that your emotional and physical bodies are being affected. If you are under stress and not addressing it, you might gain or lose weight fast. 

  • You can`t stop thinking about work or problems

As Mark Twain put it, “Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe.” You simply cannot find the solution until you basically detach from the issue.  Excessive worrying can cause both physical and psychological problems.  If you are checking your emails, phone, and similar forms of communication all the time, it is time to determine what is important in your life.

  • You can`t sit still

Being unable to stay still is a definite sign of being overstressed. If this is the case, do stretching exercises to calm your mind as there is a chance that you are overly stressed. If you are not able to relax to even watch a good movie or read a book, it is time to address the root cause of the problem.  Imbalance in the emotional body is often the cause of stressed, as things we avoid are pushed further until we eventually feel it in other parts of the body.

  • You have hair loss

According to Carolyn Jacob, MD, founder and medical director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, “Typically, people shed about 100 hairs a day. Most people don’t even notice. Sometimes, a significant stress may spark a change in your body’s routine physiological functions, and cause a disproportionate number of hairs to go into the resting phase at the same time. Then three to four months later, sometimes longer, all those resting hairs are shed. The effect can be alarming. The types of events that disrupt the normal hair cycle can be caused by the substantial physiological stresses on your body.”

  • You have a loss of libido

When stress levels increase, the stress hormone secretions which are in charge of sexual response are impacted.  Stress causes inability to experience intimacy.  If you are experiencing a loss of libido, trying stress management and relaxation techniques is a good idea.  Share the problem with your partner and work on the solution together.

  • You have major mood swings

Mental health is always affected by high stress levels. If you find yourself joyful one moment, and then enraged the next, your hormones might be affected by excess stress.  Talk to others and get help as bottling up things doesn’t help.   Stress doesn’t only affect the body, but it also compromises relationships.  It can enhance addictions, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, and other mental health problems.

  • You have little patience with others

Having little patience and tolerance with others is a common symptom of being overstressed.  If you tend to get angry quickly, the chances are you are being tormented by too much in your life.  The lack of patience is a sign that you need to slow down, be vulnerable, and ask for help.
